Proof of stake was designed to be a more efficient and sustainable alternative to proof of work, which is the technology bitcoin and Etherium use. Cardano's network was designed to solve the issues with other blockchains such as scaling problems, slow transactions, and high energy use. Their proof of stake works by allowing people to validate transactions based on how many coins they hold. Cardano aims to become a platform for decentralized apps using smart contracts. They also aim to make their platform interoperable with other blockchains, so that assets can easily be moved between different blockchains.
